Welcome to the WingTsun News Letter for July 2010

"For every action, there is an equal and opposit reaction" Sir Isaac Newton

Hello everyone and welcome to the latest WT Australia newsletter. This one is one jammed packed with all the latest news from around Australia. There are some very interesting developments in relation to seminars plus some eye opening articles. Enjoy!

In this Newsletter:

WingTsun Headquarters Waterloo

There are lots of exciting new developments taking shape in the Waterloo HQ kwoon.

Chin up bars and Hanging bags have been installed to compliment specific aspects of the various programs (Blitz, Lat-sau, Chi-sau, Reactsun). Though WT does not focus on a persons physical strength, this type of apparatus is useful for improving general health and well being as well as providing more options for fitness training.

Si Fu is working on a series of Seminars aimed at students who want to take their training and understanding of WT core Principles, and application a step further. The Seminars will be on various techniques (some from within the student programs and some taken from the more advanced Programs like knife defense and power generation) and the principles that dictate their application in specific contexts. The aim is to provide an opportunity to explore your WT at a deeper level than is available in a standard class.

Here is the list of the seminars for the second half of 2010. Remember that these seminars are designed for small groups only. So get in early to reserve your spot. Bookings are essential.

30/7/10 – Knife Defence 2. Continuing from where KD 1 left off. Again exploring the possibilities to defending bladed or sharp weapons. This seminar will concentrate on very close distance DO or DIE defensive techniques. Open to all student levels.

1/10/10 – Chi Sau 1st Section. Please read the piece in this newsletter by GM Kernspecht on “what is the use of Chi Sau”; this should give you an idea of the importance of this very unique training program. Student will be taken through the fundamental concepts and principles, which apply for your feet, right through to your fingertips. This is the first time a seminar on this subject has been offered in Australia. Open for student levels 4 and higher.

Going Soft

Generally speaking, softness (Soft: [sawft, soft] adjective, -er, -est, noun, adverb, interjection–adjective 1.yielding readily to touch or pressure; divided, or changed in shape; not hard or stiff.) is not some thing that is seen as a fighting strategy in any context. In this modern world we fight for our right to do business, for our place in the queue, and often for our basic human rights and though these battles are fought with our wits rather than our fists, they require the same strategic thinking and operational effectiveness as a knife fight. Words are mere containers for ideas and softness is often connected with weakness, passivity and surrender. Yet an understanding of WT softness is at the core of WT practice; Perhaps we need a new word for what we do that does not have all the baggage attached.

In the Blitz program we learn that correctly chosen words and there appropriate delivery, in combination with a defensive body posture, can diffuse a confrontation, or give us the advantage necessary to control our attacker and escape danger. The power of words in a confrontation is undeniable but incomplete as a strategy for self-defence. When push comes to shove, no one can hear you scream.

One of the most challenging things about teaching or learning something from some one from a different culture and language is translation. The common-use meaning of words and cultural implications are often lost. It’s so easy to miss the intended meaning or worse to misunderstand what is being said. Perhaps for this reason, our training focuses on doing rather than talking.

In WT the idea of softness is something we must embrace; it lies at the core of our guiding principles. As GM Keith R. Kernspecht so eloquently states “ WT is a Philosophy of Motion and Applied Science”. Without a personal understanding that translates to how we move and the techniques we employ, the real world benefits of becoming soft will elude us.

So how do we get this thing called softness? An understanding of the word does not necessarily translate to piratical ability. A detailed semantic description of intercepting a fist with a bong sau and the subsequent shift in structure and position may aid in understanding but not necessarily in practice. The secret of WT softness lies in how we train; i.e. one on one (or one on many if you are studying multiple attackers!) The WT system of training serves this exact purpose. WE come to understand softness and the other principles of our system by training with and touching our brothers and sisters who can express these attributes through their practice of wt.

It is a simple truth that is perhaps too obvious and is therefore overlooked.

At the end of the day when all the talking ends, we become what we do.

See you in school.

Knife Defence Seminar 2 - Do or get hurt!

Continuing from where KD 1 left off. Again exploring the possibilities to defending bladed or sharp weapons. This seminar will concentrate on very close distance DO or DIE defensive techniques. Open to all student levels. This seminar will include a 45 minutes lecture by Dr. Peter Brend DESA

Dr Peter Brend (2nd Technican WingTsun and private student of Master Fischer) has extensive experience dealing with the results of many types of blunt and sharp trauma while working as paramedic in Jülich, Germany, as a surgical intern in Durban South Africa, as anaesthetist / intensevist at the University hospital in Essen, Germany, as anaesthetist Dubbo Base hospital and as retrieval doctor with the RFDS.

His part of the Seminar will cover:

Blunt and sharp trauma what does the martial arts teacher need to know?

Viewer discretion is advised the lecture will depict real, graphic images of knife attacks and the results.

What is the Use of ChiSao?

Increasingly often, I hear about newly created styles that use our traditional "techniques" but proudly emphasize that they do not give way and completely dispense with ChiSao. What are they missing out on?

What is the actual value of our ChiSao training?

Anybody opting to dispense with ChiSao is depriving themselves of these unique advantages.

Where does the Journey End? (On the road to WT Technician Level)

DSC3141

Ah! It is the eternal question really. Or, is there an end at all? With a western mindset generally always focused on the destination (which has many merits), we sometimes loose sight of where we are walking and why we started walking in the first place. This is ever present in our WT training.

Goal setting is one of the most important tools an individual can implement in their lives.

Modifying the goal or destination as one travels along the road is sometimes inevitable.

In my personal WT training journey I have set 2 goals, which I am happy to say I reached both. But I must admit that the road was not how it looked on the map I drew up.

But that is what made the journey all the more rewarding in my opinion. The unexpected lessons were the ones that have stuck with me until this day. I now have my 3rd WT goal mapped out and have taken the first steps toward it.

It is with this “goal setting” mind set and approach that Master Stefan Fischer will introduce a new training option at the HQ for students - The Technician Training Program (TTP)!

The TTP is open for those students who want to set out and work towards achieving the 1st Technician Level in WingTsun. To help achieve this, students in the TTP will train directly under the guidance of Master Fischer honing their skills and understanding of the WT system. There will also be a range of other benefits that come with the TTP package. For full detail please contact me directly at the HQ

YimWingChun

It’s also great to see some more females joining us. WingTsun was developed by the Shaolin Buddhist nun, Ng Mui. Legend says, Ng later took on a student, the young, female Yim WingTsun. She passed the system on to Yim so she could defend herself against the unwanted advances of a local bully.

WingTsun on the Street

In the WT family we have a policy that violence is to be avoided. But if we must defend ourselves or our loved ones we will do so with conviction and courage.

F1000007

This was demonstrated very well by HQ student Robert Bobby Elder. This is an incident that Bob related to us. Dear reader please note that our Bob stands at a courageous 5ft 4inchs.

Dear Si-Fu & Si-Hing Peter, just saying hello and to tell about my WT experience. Called into my local hotel for a couple of beers one Friday evening. Walked up to a group of friends to say g’day. Got introduced to a Maori friend of a friend who thought it would be funny to try and break my hand. I told him what I thought and he - being a good 6'2 & 100 kg - came with the classic 'chest puffed out’, hands by the side, Giving me typical, “what're going to do”. So I went with the double palms strike under his pecks (ed. Movement from the Chum Kiu Form), with a good drop step. He went flying, literally, stools, tables everywhere. He came back, I kicked him in the groin, just the right height for me and he went flying even further, but did not come back. I went home rather than be kicked out of my local and have not seen him since. Great stuff!

thank you and hope to catch up soon.

WingTsun Parramatta News

New and improved WingTsun Parramatta open for training!

That's right, WT parramatta has a new home at Level 1, 44-56 Phillip Street Parramatta. We have moved to bigger and better premises, with better facilities, better atmosphere and even parking! Once complete, we will be able to provide our students with 3 individual training areas: 2 dedicated WingTsun Training rooms plus an exercise/weights room for those who feel like complimenting their WT training with some fitness or strength training. There will also be a recreational area where students will be able to relax before class and allow new and potential new students to interact and get to know current students better.

It's an exciting new beginning for WingTsun Parramatta and we hope that the new school will add to the our students WingTsun experience.

And as none of this would be possible without the dedication and hard work of our students, i'd like to take this opportunity to thank those that have helped make the new school a reality:

Andrew Lam, Moz Mungkung, Suraj Paniker, Ben Fong, Dan Gill, Adnan Hammoudi, Andrew Han, Richard Tang, Dennis Zirkovic and Chris Kassoutas.

If I have forgotten anyone, please forgive me, my memory isn't great at the best of times and it's been a crazy few weeks, rest assured we appreciate everyone who has taken time out of their lives from family and work to help us create this fantastic new school. In the next issue of the WT newsletter I will provide some pics of the new school, but consider this an open invitation to WT students, feel free to come on down and check it out in person.

And while I'm at it, I'd like to welcome a couple of new faces and one returned face. A warm welcome to Raymond who has joined us recently and a big welcome back to Moz who had trained with us for a couple of years as a teenager and has now returned after completing all his studies. It's great to have you guys and we look forward to many years of training together.

That's it from me, happy training everyone, and I might see you out at the new school!

Steve.
