Welcome to the WingTsun News Letter for March 2010
"Its the mark of an educated mind, to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it" Aristotle
This is a busy time of the year for most of us and its easy to be lackadaisical about training. Especially when the focus is on relaxation and various kinds of recreation. Training can take a back seat to other forms of enjoyment. One of the truly great features of the WT training system is that it can be done almost anywhere and requires no specialised equipment. (NB Please note within the WT system there are 3 empty handed forms, one Wooden dummy from and two weapons forms. The first two forms are learn t in the first 12 student grades.) Which means you could get a private lesson in a toilet cubicle and you can practice you Kup Jarn whilst peculating coffee.
Getting good at WT requires practice and instruction. There are probably self made masters out there. However they are one in a million freaks. The rest of us must go to school and be guided (sometimes poked and prodded !!) into becoming bonafide wt pugilists.

Friday night classes are on hold for the daylight saving months and will return later in the year. Ropes have been installed in the rear training area and have been incorporated into the Core strength training Program.
Dean Bullok successfully graded on the 10th student level and joins the ranks of veteran Senior WT Students.
WingTsun Knife defence seminar
Traditionally, WingTsun knife defence is taught in the later student programmes, as it is helpful to teach knife work in general which also includes the teachings of how to use a knife for self defence. As a responsible teacher, I never have and will not teach students I do not know very well. I will not teach students who have not been with our organisation for a while and have been deemed mentally stable and responsible human beings the skill to potentially cut other people in to pieces. As a matter of fact I believe schools or organisation who teacher every Joe Blow from the street how to work with a knife endanger society.
Having myself experienced two different incidences during my time as a bouncer in Heidelberg’s night club “Cigarillo” where I was confronted once with a fella wielding two butterfly knifes and the second time by guy with a police record as long as most peoples memoires with a crocodile Dundee size bowie knife in his hand, which I needed to sorted out. I know how challenging this can be for a student.
The fact is knife attacks do happen and even though, contrary to what many believe, criminal incidents with Knifes, Swords, Screwdrivers or scissors have not risen in NSW since 2000 according to The NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics you can read about it in the paper on a weekly base and we witnessed the aftermath of such an incidents around 4 weeks ago at the local pub having lunch at the instructor weekend.
After this incident I made the decision to separate the knife defence without having a knife yourself (please remember It became a crime to carry a knife in public in 1998 when the Crimes Legislation Amendment (Police and Public Safety) Act 1998 (NSW) was passed) and teach the knife defence to students from any level in a series of special seminars where the first one was held last week in Sydney and the next one will be in two weeks time in Brisbane.
So hope to see you all there

An ego free training enviroment
What is the point.? Does it require an operation?
Many would translate this to mean “Don't be a wanker” ; which is not really inaccurate as much as too broad in its scope. Most Humans secretly fear being a real wanker and have vastly differing opinions as to the nature of this state of being.
This interpretation may have the effect of cultivating an atmosphere of paranoia in some students and this is not the intended outcome of encouraging us to leave our egos at the door when we come to school.
Ego 1. The 'I' or self of any person … as thinking, feeling and willing … and distinguishing itself from others. (Macquarie Dictionary)
From this definition one could infer that: if you are a human you have one and, generally speaking, its a good thing. Enabling me to enjoy being me and spot a scoundrel at distance.
My ego tells me who I am and influences my estimation of others. In a learning context, it can get in the way of my ability to entertain ideas (critical thinking – the ability to entertain an idea without accepting it) and perform techniques that are new and unfamiliar, by distracting me with self-obsession that effectively blocks the learning process. On the street, being self-centered protects me from danger but in the kwoon it can interfere with my ability to listen, understand and remember.
Sweet.!! just check the ego and its all good, but how does one actually achieve this altered state of being? For each of us the details are different but we begin at the same place. The first Power Principle tells us to “free youself from yourself”, before we can begin to deal with anyone else. The first Fighting Principle tells us “if the way is free go forward”, but how many time do we block our own way with self obsession? If our minds are awash with thoughts and emotion we can become blind to the reality of our situation. The First form (Siu nim tau) introduces us to the concept of beginning the process of opening ourselves to new ways, by the acceptance of a “Little idea” at a time. With fertilisation, these ideas grow and our expression of our WT becomes how we live our lives; We are transformed by the process of learning.
So take the cotton wool out of your ears and put it in your mouth. Have faith (though not blind faith) that your Si-Fu knows how to help you and be kind to you brothers and sisters.
10 Tips to keep your kid's save

10 Kids-WingTsun tips for safe a trip to school:
It’s been a great start to the new year with so many new recruits joining the Parramatta family, so WingTsun Parramatta would like to welcome our newest students, Jason, Roy, Vlad, Denis, Alvin and a big welcome back to Chris after a years absence.
Thank you to Si-Fu for the recent Knife Defense Seminar, everyone in attendance was enthusiastic, gave it their all and had fun doing it. WTP’s representatives on the night (apart from my humble self) was Dan, one of our more senior students as well as two relatively new (but rising steadily) students, Marko and Andrew. All three thoroughly enjoyed the 3 hours and agreed that what they learned was more than worth the sore and bruised wrists!
Here is some feedback from our students:
Excellent and enjoyable course in terms of techniques and mental aspect. It's a privilege to learn from such a highly skilled Si-fu. Highly recommended. Andrew
After a such a great start to the year, we are hoping to keep the momentum going and grow the WingTsun Parramatta family further, helping many more people find the confidence and skills they need to live a life free from fear.
A life lived in fear is a life half lived.

Timing – Part 4: The hands of the clock turn differently in WingTsun
This month the serie of different articles on "Timing" as an extract from my next book ends.
For a master of timing, time seems to go more slowly and even stop to reveal a gap to him. Or does he actually move on a different time plane?
In normal life we can only be in the present – we never experience the past and future.
A normal person cannot imagine the hands of the clock turning to the left, with time running backwards. Does the "arrow of time" not always have to point towards the direction of developments? Scientists such as the English physicist Stephen Hawking or the German cosmologist Jürgen Ehlers of the Max-Planck Institute for Gravitational Technology in Potsdam see a relationship between the progress of time and the expansion of the universe. Lawrence S. Schuman of Clarkson University in New York takes the view that time would run backwards if the universe stopped expanding at some point, and began to collapse upon itself. Would the fragments of a cup that had just broken be joined together again in that case, as if nothing had happened?
In the same way our opponent finds that the target he has aimed at, and which he can almost feel his fist touching, moves away from him the further his fist advances: space itself appears to withdraw from him and expand. And at the same moment as the attacker just fails to strike e.g. our solar plexus, our counter-attack strikes home with the defending hand and the further development of the fight goes in his direction, i.e. the time arrow is turned around and flies towards him.
The present in WT is "during", while the past is "afterwards", a time disadvantage we do not want to incur, and the future is "before".
If I am practicing Chi-Sao with a partner, we are both in the "during" phase if I am able to withdraw the target from his attack without hampering the attacker in his action. I then immediately turn the time arrow around (like a U-turn) and direct it towards the opponent, letting him continue his movement in the original, but now opposite direction – the "afterwards" – while my counter-attack is already seeking its new target in the "before".
